Failed ConsumerLab testing--- too much leadOct 31, 2011
By kellith5 I have a paid subscription to ConsumerLabs. They do independent testing on vitamins and suppliments. I was looking up adult vitamins but they also did testing on dog ones. I purchase Canine Plus. I have never purchased the product pictured but saw it failed the consumer lab report. I thought I should post something so people don't purchase it since it could be dangerous. Here is the line from the report:
Pet-Tabs Complete Daily Vitamin-Mineral Supplement for Dogs (Puppies and dogs under 10 lbs. - 1/2 tablet daily. Dogs over 10 lbs. - 1 tablet daily Dist. by Virback AH, Inc. NOT APPROVED Found 167.0% of claimed minimum amount of vitamin A7 Found 7.45 mcg lead per tablet (3.73 to 7.45 mcg of lead per daily serving
Lead contamination None of the supplements for human consumption had lead in excess of the stringent limit used by ConsumerLab.com. However, a pet product, Pet-Tabs Complete Daily Vitamin-Mineral Supplement for Dogs contained 7.45 mcg of lead per tablet; by comparison the FDA notes that children should not be exposed to more than 6 mcg of lead per day. As noted above, this product also contained more vitamin A than listed. ConsumerLab.com has reported elevated levels of lead in this product in the past an amount that has been increasing with each review. In 2009, we found Pet-Tabs Complete Daily for Dogs to contain 6.45 mcg of lead per tablet and, in 2007, we found 1.41 mcg. California typically requires warning labels on supplements for human use that contain over 0.5 mcg of lead per day.

A product that de-liversFeb 28, 2010

"Autumn Eternal"
I started giving these to my precious doggie about 5 months ago along with brewers yeast/garlic tabs. I noticed 2 things. #1- where did the fleas go? ok, maybe it was the garlic tabs. #2- where is the February shed? By this time his hair becomes my carpet, but I can actually see my carpet. His shedding has becomed a self sustained wonder. I never knew this was the normal way a dog sheds. His coat is changing color and density and I am seeing extremely limited, almost none, hair on the carpets. I do have to admit I am using both pills, in conjunction, so i can't say its this one or the other by itself. I do have a feeling the pet tabs are controlling the shed situation, but the combo is extremely potent. If you do buy these it might be a good idea to get the brewers yeast/garlic tabs as well. 5 stars for this wonderful product and the fact that they made it with a flavor that my dog can't resist.

Wow! This is a Miracle in a Bottle!Dec 10, 2011
By SouthernCharm I have to call these vitamins a miracle! I have an 11 year old toy poodle who had a lot of ailments. He has an enlarged heart, arthritis in back legs, slipped disk, patellar luxation in both hind knees, and generalized lethargy (low energy). He slowed down a lot in the last 2 years so I thought I would try some vitamins. Within 2 days he started acting like a puppy again! He was chasing squirrels in the yard and running like a greyhound! On walks, his pace was so much faster than before. After his walk, he came home with continued energy, not like before where he would be exhausted and just want to rest. He was once again able to jump up on my bed and couch. He appears to be pain free. It's been months now since I started him on these vitamins and the energy is still apparent. I have to give these vitamins the credit. Nothing was abnormal on any of his bloodwork so I can't say he was lacking in certain areas of minerals or vitamins or electrolytes. He loves eating these like a treat so I never had a problem trying to hide them in cheese or whatever. He only needs 1/2 tablet so this bottle lasts a long time. Once a day is all it takes. I will keep him on these the rest of his life. I hope it's a long one. He is a very loving, loyal, obedient, and sweet dog. I will highly recommend these vitamins to all my friends and family.
Lead Content Should Not Be A ConcernNov 29, 2011
By Avid Mystery Reader I have given my dogs Pet-Tabs for years and as far as I know there has been no consequences. In fact, my vets (from Connecticut, Maryland, Oklahoma, and Arizona) have all recommended them especially for older dogs who may not eat appropriately. The response by the reviewer about the amount of lead is concerning but I went online and found a site that talks about the validity of the research that the reviewer commented on. The results of one testing of one batch of Pet-Tabs is not conclusive. Also, the amount cited is quite low, even tap water has more lead in it. The company Pfizer that makes the Pet-Tabs is conducting their own investigation but feels this report scared the general consumer with unsubstantiated claims. I will continue to give my dog the Pet-Tabs. Most dogs seem to really like them. I also make my own homemade dog food and feel that adding a vitamin a day may help supplement my dog's diet. The price of the tabs is really good at Amazon and shipping is generally free when I buy two bottles. I consider this a bargain for my dog's health.
