Wow, I was shockedJan 31, 2010
By fake name Honestly, I was prepared for a fight with my dachshund when I pulled out the toothbrush and toothpaste. We have had troubles before and had to take her in to a costly teeth cleaning at our vet's office. I was pleasantly surprised because she loved it! She even followed me when I was finished, because she wanted more brushing!
I first let her taste it and then used the small side of the long toothbrush and was able to scrub on all on her teeth - even the ones in the far back. She was okay with it and thought it was fun, because she tried to bite at it to play.
I chose this doggie toothpaste because of the enzymes, non-foaming, toothbrush choices, and beef flavor. I am happy with my choice as it takes the stress out of brushing my 8 year-old baby's teeth. She likes it and it is something that needs to be done. The best part is her fresh doggy breath!

By phoebe sylverthorn This product is great for the price. Toothpaste is yummy and can even be put on food to enhance. Brush is 2 sided so adapts to size of pet and even comes with a finger brush which fits my finger fine. (I have small hands)

My dogs love it!Aug 12, 2008
By Emilee My dogs loved it! We have the chicken flavor and it makes brushing their teeth very easy. Whenever I walk up to them they don't run away from me! I would definitely recommend this to anyone!

Great Design & Toothpaste, Comparison to DDS But Your Mileage May VaryMar 12, 2012

"Faluzure"
I have two small dogs (shih tzu/yorkshire terrier mixes) who are a little over 3 & 2 years old respectively. They are a little under 10 pounds each and just recently, I had to take them to the vet to get their teeth cleaned because they had "stage 1" dental tartar all over their teeth. It cost me $60 per dog...
Because of the $120 vet bill, I decided to try & brush their teeth again. In the past, I tried brushing their teeth with this product: 8in1 D.D.S. Canine Dental Kit. Unfortunately for me, it was a bad experience because my dogs absolutely hated the toothpaste (wouldn't lick it) and the idea of getting their teeth brushed was literally a 15 minute experience per dog. After reading the positive reviews of Petrodex, I knew I had to give it a shot. I ended up buying the beef toothpaste version from Amazon instead of the cheaper chicken flavor.
Compared to the DDS Canine Kit I previously both brands look nearly identical. With the exception of the breath mints, both come with the fingertip brush (which is somewhat pointless for me since both my dogs are adults), the 2-way toothbrush and the paste. The toothbrushes with each kit are a little different. I'll get to that in a minute.
Per the directions, you're supposed to let your dog sniff and taste the toothpaste on his/her own prior to brushing. Simply put, my dogs ate it like crazy candy. Both of them absolutely loved the flavor of the toothpaste. Compare this to the DDS brand where they wanted nothing to do with it (one of them actually sneezed after smelling). I let them taste a fingertip amount and waited the next day before I reintroduced them to it.
The next day I did the same taste routine and then proceeded to brush their teeth. The younger dog fought me a bit and absolutely hated the idea of having his teeth brushed. Even with all the cooing and praising I was doing to him, he still squirmed but because his personality is submissive, he eventually gave in and let me brush his teeth. All was said and done in about 7-8 minutes.
The older dog however, was one of those horror stories you read about where she acted like I was killing her and did everything in her power to prevent me from brushing her teeth. What took 7-8 minutes for the other dog actually took me a little over 15 minutes.
Despite the experiences, I'm still giving the Petrodex kit 5 stars because the issue is with my dogs, not the product. The product is great, because the toothpaste is actually palatable but more importantly, the brush is BETTER than the one I got with the DDS kit. The reason it's better is because with the DDS kit, the bristles are all the same height. Given the size of my dogs and their small mouths, it's hard to gradually reach back to their molars with the toothbrush in general. The reason the Petrodex is better is because the bristles are angled with different lengths (from smaller to bigger). What this does for me is allow me to insert the toothbrush easier to the back of their mouths.
I can only assume that things will get better over time with brushing their teeth and can recommend this product.

So far, so good.....my dog LIKES it!May 27, 2011
By pleinelune After having bills for teeth cleaning for pets, I made up my mind the next pet I got, I would start them off right so they wouldn't have to be put under to have their teeth cleaned and I wouldn't have a huge bill!
Recently got a great new shelter dog and did what I said, I decided to start him right off cleaning his teeth! So got this and tried today. As advised, I put a bit of the toothpaste on my finger and let my dog taste it. Then I put a bit on the toothbrush and proceeded to brush a few of his teeth, taking it slowly. Eventually I got to all of them and he didn't seem to mind at all. There is also a little gum massager one can use for puppies. I used that on my adult dog to try to reach some of his back teeth. Overall very happy with this product because my dog doesn't fight me, but seems to like it!
