3Good idea but mine keeps coming apart.Feb 25, 2006
By Michael De Marco "Iggy Owner"
I bought this item to put on the ID collar of my Italian Greyhound just in case it managed to get away. The tube comes with a small rolled up piece of paper with space to place your contact information in case your pet gets loose. Great idea and I think everyone should have one. However, here is why I only give it 3 out of 5 stars. On the one I bought, it seems that the part that screws into the tube, and which holds the rolled up paper, comes unscrewed. I discovered it on the floor of my living room and screwed it back into the tube. The next day I found the bottom again seperated from the tube. This time I tightened it as tight as I could. The next day, gone again. This time I think somewhere in the back yard and I haven't found it again. I don't think that the natural motion of the dog should cause the bottom to keep separating from the tube. I guess I could use a little superglue to keep it together but then I don't think someone finding the dog with the collar would be able to open it then.

5Tip to keeping them screwed together. Great for medical issuesJul 06, 2008
By Randy Reeves "PapaBear"
This is a duplicate of my review for the large tube. I have both sizes.
The why:
I bought 3 of these for my 3 dogs. My border collie has epilepsy and needs daily medication. If she were to be lost missing a single dose of medication would mean violent seizures within hours. Having the name of the medication and dose along with the vet name and number gives me some peace of mind.
I got the small tube for the other two dogs and the large tube for her since she needed more information in hers.

Tube tightening. How to prevent separation:
I only had one tube come apart the first week. When that happened I got a nickle to tighten the tubes. Even then one tube didn't want to stay together on my more active dog. The more active the dog the more likely the tubes want to unscrew.
The trick is using plumber tape (white tape used for sealing connections) on the threads. That will prevent them from coming apart easily on their own.
I've had them on my dogs for a year now and none of the tubes have come apart. The two tubes on my less active dogs only tightened with a coin. The other using plumber tape. I checked them today for the first time in over a year and they all remain tight. It doesn't hurt to check them when you bathe or groom your dog.

The paper. A tip:
I used my computer and could fit a lot of information on the paper inside. Instead of using the template included I made my paper slips taller. I taper the slip from one end so that it is taller on one end of the long slip than the other. This makes retrieving the paper slip far easier. It is hard to get the paper out if it is below the edge of the bottom half of the tube. Tapering the slip gives it a kind of handle by rolling the paper with the tall end on the inside of the roll. I have also tried using a bit of tape crafted as a handle that worked fairly well.

Tube fastening to the collar:
The only issue I've had is keeping the tubes on the collar of my Border Collie. She is a very active dog and requires the plumber tape to keep her tube together. Somehow she manages to get her tags and tube off her collar leaving the keyring undamaged. It is as if she manipulates a human to take them off her. The rings are still on her collar but the tags and tube are gone! The rings, meanwhile, are in perfect shape. No bends or evidence of tampering.
I found my other females tube, rabies tag, and Avid chip ID tag on the floor by the front door this morning so she either taught my other female the trick or removed it for her because the ring on her collar is in place and in perfect shape. I was a little surprised because this is the first time since I bought these things that it has been off her neck.
How this is possible leaving the ring in place and undamaged on her collar I have no clue. I have a hard time with human fingers and a thumb getting these things on and off those rings. Perhaps I'll glue the ring closed. I'm open to suggestions.

Bottom line:
I recommend these if you need more information than you can fit on an ID tag. I would NOT replace an ID tag with them. A little ingenuity will insure these last you a long time.

5I think these are great! Glad to find them on AmazonJun 28, 2010

I love these tubes! I have a hard time finding them in pet stores and I am very glad to find them here on Amazon.

I have never had a problem with the tube coming undone, but I use these for my cats. The only time I have had to replace them is when a cat comes home without the collar. I use the quick release collars in case they get caught on something and apparently they work! : )

I, too, threw away the paper that comes with the tube and use my computer to print out the info I wanted to convey to someone who might find my cat. I feel very confident that if my cat was ever lost and found that he would be returned to me quickly, as the finder would have all the info needed!
