Extremely Wicked ProductAug 24, 2010
After having a pet sitter watch my 14 year old Golden Retriever for a week, I came home to find her infested with fleas. By the time I realized that these little critters were all over my dog it was too late to bathe her. So I ran to Wal-Mart bought Hartz UltraGuard Plus Flea and Tick Spray, Hartz Flea Shampoo with Aloe, and Hartz Flea and Tick 3 month drop supply. As soon as I got home I read the directions and began spraying away hoping to make a dent in their population before bathing her the following day. The directions state that if you have a dog with long hair you need to "ruffle" the hair and make sure that the product touches the skin. As I was doing this I noticed that all of her hair was falling out in clumps and sticking to my fingernails. My hands were covered in her fur and I couldn't see the end of my fingers through the mass of fur stuck to my nails. I figured it was just because the spray was wet, however, when I finally washed my hands, I realized that all my nailpolish was gone. It had taken my nailpolish off and had bonded the hair to my sticky nails. I panicked and bathed her quickly knowing that it must be burning the crap out of her skin! DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!

Please be careful--Hartz Flea & Tick Products are extremely dangerous to pets. Thousands of injuries and deaths have been reported to the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), the regulatory agency that has oversight over these topical spot-on pesticide products. The EPA issued a Cancellation Order in 2005 on Hartz's cat and kitten products, which contained precisely the same ingredients in exactly the same volumes as their current dog/puppy products. The EPA is currently considering action on Hartz's cat and dog products because thousands of incidents have been reported as a result of Hartz and other manufacturer's that use topical spot-on products containing neurotoxins pesticide ingredients. Over 44,000 adverse incidents were reported to the EPA in 2008, that's up from over 28,000 the previous year--astounding numbers reflecting a terrible safety record. Please use safer alternatives. They are available. Speak with your vet. He or she can give you much safer recommendations than Hartz or Vectra or Vectra 3D (made by Hartz's sister company and recently sold by vets--avoid it!). If you cannot afford the products the vets recommend, I have learned that most veterinarians will help with the price if you will avoid using Hartz and other neurotoxin, pesticide products. Please be careful; Hartz has created a world of heartbreak.
