Misleading as to sizeJun 23, 2009
By A. Schaeffer I will be traveling to Brazil with my diabetic 16 pound cat. I read the reviews over and over because I was afraid my cat wouldn't fit in it. The 18 inches long includes the wheels. The real lengh is 16. There is no way my 16 pound cat would fit comfortably in there. Only if she were smashed during the 15 hours trip. Since it's said here that it will carry a 22 pounds animal, I decided to buy it. I guess my husband will use it as a backpack now... and we'll have to buy another carrier for the trip.

Overall not badAug 26, 2008

"Shih Tzu lover"
I already have one backpack that I really like and was trying to find one just like it for our new dog (the one I have is from Target and they stopped carrying it). We like to take our dogs (13 lb Shih Tzus) bike riding with us and we usually attach the hook to their harness and leave the top unzipped, so we like something with fairly sturdy sides, which this one wasn't bad. Also, glad it had the hook inside. However, this bag was much too small for our dogs. If we zipped them in completely they were smashed into little balls and if we left the top unzipped they practically fell out. I gave the bag to my parents who have a 7 lb toy poodle and this bag is the perfect size for them. Overall a good bag, just make sure your dog is small enough.

Does its job, not spectacular.Mar 22, 2010
By Lorraine Darling I got this carrier to cart my cats to and from the vet's office on my bike or by walking. Of course they flip the heck out while in it, but they're cats and that's what they do. Here are my major issues with the backpack:
1) The metal lining on the inside that gives the front structure and keeps the canvas off the animal constantly slips out of its "holsters". Basically, you have a bunch of metal wires in the bag that may or may not hit your animal. I wouldn't say it's terribly dangerous, but it would definitely be uncomfortable.
2) This bag is NOT for large cats. I would say it can reasonably accommodate an animal up to 10lbs, and definitely not for long stretches of time. My 12lb cat has to sit upright in it, whereas my smaller 7lb cat can lie down. I do not have a small dog so I can't comment on how it is for dogs (I am reasonably sure my 50lb dog would not fit!).
3) If you wear this as a backpack (and it has straps to do so, so I imagine it isn't out of the ordinary), be aware that the animal will basically be slammed around inside the backpack when you put it on or take it off. This may be especially pertinent to owners of delicate dogs or cowardly cats.
I never use the wheels on this backpack so I can't comment where that is concerned, but as far as the quality of the bag, it seems pretty average. I have owned and used this bag lightly for five months, I do not fear that the straps will tear off due to weight, or that the bag will fall apart anytime soon. At the same time, I would never try to stress the bag to test its limits. It is well-ventilated and not terribly awkward to carry as a backpack.
Overall, the carrier is useful if you just need to take your pooch or feline from point A to point B. Beyond that, I would definitely advise against keeping an animal in it for longer than what is absolutely necessary.

My pet loved this carrierApr 04, 2008
By Amarily Rodriguez My pet flew round-trip from White Plains, NY to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. I suggest you sit in the widest seat available, usually the middle seat in coach because there is more room underneath the middle seat in front of you to place the carrier. The window seat in coach has least space in front of you for the carrier and in my opinion the aisle seats cause too many distractions to your dog.

Good design idea, poor qualitySep 06, 2010
By J. Hayes First, let me say I did not purchase this carrier on Amazon, but at a local pet supply store - twice. Initially I thought this carrier was perfect for my 12lb dog. He jumped right in! Casual Canine got the idea of the design right, but the execution of this product is way off!
About 2 weeks in with my first one, my sister was carrying the back on her back when she tried to adjust the strap and snapped the plastic part that the strap goes through. Okay, user error maybe, I made do since no one could repair it. Within 3 months, the netting started to pull away from the edges (it's weak plastic, and closer investigation showed not stitched well) which naturally the dog discovered, poked at with his nose and then and got his head stuck in! I repaired that too! Then at almost 6 months of use one day one of the wheels broke off as I was rolling the pack down the sidewalk. There was no repairing that! I just thought maybe it was a fluke, maybe I just got "a bad one".
Clearly I was not pleased, but since it was past returning to the store and the receipt was nowhere to be found to send it to Casual Canine directly, I decided I would try again. I bought the same Casual Canine carrier. I never found a similar design in another line. We gave the store the old one to throw away, and left the store to get on the bus and keep running errands. HOLY COW, 15 minutes away from the store, I see two small holes where the mesh should be sewn to the edge of the opening flap that I didn't notice before purchase. I had to complete my errands before other places closed so we kept going. Off the bus at my next stop, I am wheeling down the sidewalk (I was already carrying a tote, so no backpack use at that time) when a man started laughing at the dog...what?!?? Most people never realize there is a dog in the bag unless they are close to you, so if privacy is a consideration, it's great until it falls apart! I looked back and his head was through the net, since he found the hole and poked it with his nose. Yes I took it back and got my money back. Such a shame that good design had such poor quality terrible function. Don't bother!
